Wooden Magnet depicting Chinese Tomb Guradian on display at The Burrell.
Ceramic burial objects reached a peak of magnificance during the Tang Dynasty, particularly in the first half of the 8th century before the An Lushan rebellion of 756 AD.
Models were made of the spirit world to stand guard against evil spirits in Tang Dynasty tombs. These were either 'qitou' figures in grotesque animal shape or, like these figures 'fangxiang' figures in exaggerated human form.
