Mark Rothko (1903–1970) defied easy interpretation or classification, becoming a key figure in Abstract Expressionism. Despite being associated with the movement, Rothko rejected labels, believing instead that his art represented "a consummated experience between picture and onlooker."

Originally creating figurative works, Rothko transitioned to his now-iconic color fields—bold, pulsating blocks of red, yellow, ochre, maroon, black, and green. These color masses were not simply devoid of human figures; Rothko claimed that he had replaced them with symbols and shapes that conveyed the full spectrum of the human experience, particularly its tragedy. He empowered viewers to engage emotionally with his art, stating, “A picture lives by companionship, expanding and quickening in the eyes of the sensitive observer.”

This book provides an introduction to Rothko’s intellectual approach and profound impact, from his early figurative works to his most celebrated color fields, offering insights into his dramatic, intimate, and revolutionary art.
