Old Shawlands and Newlands

Horses, carts, trams, a few pedestrians and the odd bicycle appear in this wee book on these two, adjacent, Glasgow southside districts. It’s hard to imagine a time when Pollokshaws, Crossmyloof and Strathbungo were separate villages with cute rows of thatched cottages, dairies and smithies – maybe not a rural idyll (outside toilets and no central heating and the nearest Costa Coffee 120 years away) but utterly unlike today’s urban sprawl. This collection of photographs, many previously unpublished, features the main drags today’s residents will recognise and quite a number of vanished building of these now fashionable suburbs.
