Glasgow Life Museums started collecting European dress in the 1870s. Several of these early donations were from local manufacturers and are typical of the major textile industries that were once proud to call Glasgow home. The collection continued to develop during the early decades of the 20th century, thanks to generous gifts from the public. Many items have never been seen before and this beautifully illustrated book showcases some of the very best objects, particularly one-of-a-kind 16th-century articles from the Burrell Collection. Introducing European Dress has been written by Glasgow Life Museums' curator Rebecca Quinton, who is based at Glasgow Museums Resource Centre. It is a tenth anniversary reprint of Introducing European Costume, first published in 2015 to accompany the exhibition A Century of Style: Costume and Colour 1800–1899 at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum from 25 September 2015–14 February 2016.

About the author: Rebecca Quinton is Curator, European Dress and Textiles at Glasgow Life Museums. Prior to this she was Curator, Costume and Textiles, at Brighton and Hove Museums. She is the author of Patterns of Childhood: Samplers from Glasgow Museums (2005), Glasgow Museums: Seventeenth-century costume (2013), Introducing European Tapestries (2022), and Introducing European Embroideries (2024)
