The Glasgow District Subway, second only to London in the UK and the third underground system in the world, has a fascinating history. Originally operated as a cable railway and later electrified, its early rolling stock remained in use until the 1970s. Following a major modernization, the Subway is now run by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, with its distinctive orange trains earning the local nickname “the Clockwork Orange.”

Covering the circular route, clockwise and anti-clockwise, the Subway serves fifteen stations including the ornate St Enoch. Keith Anderson traces the system’s development from construction through modernization to the present day, offering a detailed account of Glasgow’s unique underground transport network.
