A vivid introduction to the father of modern art.

In the latter half of the 19th century, in the verdant countryside near Aix-en-Provence, Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) was busy creating landscapes and still lifes that would go on to reshape the course of modern art. With compact, intense dabs of paint and bold new explorations of light and space, he bridged the gap between Impressionism and the defining movements of the 20th century. Matisse and Picasso would later refer to him as “the father of us all.”

This concise and beautifully illustrated volume presents key works from Cézanne’s oeuvre, exploring his development, experimentation, and lasting influence. From vibrant compositions of fruits and pears to tranquil scenes of outdoor bathers, the book highlights his innovative use of colour, perspective, and texture to capture what he called “a harmony parallel to Nature.”

Among the featured works are The Card Players, Cézanne’s celebrated portrayals of his southern French surroundings, and his distinctive landscapes with their layered hues and geometric precision—each one echoing the light and structure of Provence while introducing a radical new understanding of depth and form.
