During the last two years of his life Manet, who was seriously ill, painted some seventeen flower still-lifes, of which this is one. Many of these small paintings show lilacs and roses, brought as gifts to the artist by his friends. The painting of these works did not require too much of Manet’s failing energy and they gave the artist enormous pleasure.
As with many of the late flower still-lifes, the composition here is subtle and simple. Against a neutral greyish-blue background, Manet has posed a crystal flute vase in which are placed a pink and a yellow rose, and a few green leaves. Manet’s painterliness is evident in the broad brushstrokes he uses to convey the forms of the petals and the leaves.
